The Effects of Mass Media on the Development of the Children

The mass media, particularly television, influence childhood development by providing opportunities for modeling and information-seeking outside family and school. Americans in all age groups tend to spend more time watching television than any activity other than sleeping. The average American child has been estimated to watch over 20,000 television commercials per year in addition to the commercial programming interspersed between them. In 2000, children two to five years old watched 40 hours of television per week and children six to eleven years old watched 50-60 hours per week. Thus the messages that television conveys not only represents the culture in which they appear but are also a large part of it.

Stereotypical behavior by females and males characterizes both children's and adult's programming, as well as commercials. For example, a study of Saturday morning children's programs found that 68% of the major characters were male and that male characters engaged in more activity than female characters. Boys thereby had the greater opportunity to imitate same-sex models than girls. Also, the sexes tended to appear in different roles. Females were more often presented in relationships with others such as family or friends, while males were more often portrayed in roles independent of others or at work. In commercials, males were presented as more knowledgeable and females as more bewildered. Here we see the familiar pattern of males seeming more important, deserving of more attention, and more in command of themselves and the situation. Not surprisingly, both children and adults who watch more television tend to be more aware of gender stereotypes, see themselves in more stereotypical terms and hold more traditional attitudes toward men's and women's roles.

Magazine advertising has conveyed similar messages. Until recently, ads rarely showed women in working roles and never showed them as executives or professional. Several stereotypes of women's roles occurred regularly

The Effects of Mass Media on the Development of the Children

a. Women's place as in the home
b. Women as not making important decisions
c. Women as dependent and in need of men's protection
d. Men regarding women as sex objects, not as people.

Women most often were portrayed as happy and diligent homemakers, beautiful and dependent social companions, or most concerned with being blonde, thin, or having other physical characteristics they did not possess.

Television has made some attempts to adjust to the reality of women in the workplace, but not without difficulty. The Wall Street Journal observed in 1984 that, while most advertisers agreed that they should no longer portray mothers as dim-witted housewives aiming to please, they didn't know what should replace those images. As a result, fewer commercials and programs were showing married mothers at all and Dad was instructing the kids about the virtues of toothpaste, instant rice, and the like. Television's stay-at-home mothers have been replaced by single women, divorced women sharing homes. These changes suggest that television may contribute less to the formation and reinforcement of gender stereotypes than in the past. It has contributed greatly to gender stereotyping by present-day parents, however, who are passing on what they have learned about male and female roles to their children.

An Expert Guide - How to Influence People With Social Influence Theory

A lot has been said on social influence theory and it's power to guide others on how to influence people. Social influence is used in many ways and can be seen in conformity, socialization, peer pressure, obedience, leadership, persuasion, sales, and marketing. Before I continue further, let us look into the definition of the theory:

What's Social Influence Theory?

Social influence occurs when an individual's thoughts or actions are affected by other people intentionally or unintentionally as a result of the way the changed person perceives themselves in relationship to the influencer, other people and society in general.

An Expert Guide - How to Influence People With Social Influence Theory

Harvard psychologist, Herbert Kelman explains more with 3 identified broad varieties on this theory:

Compliance : A person looks like he agrees with the majority of the people within a group even though deep in his heart he's not

Identification: A person will be influenced by well respected or liked person such as celebrities or elder family members to follow his or her behaviors.

Internalization : A person will be easily influenced to agree with something both publicly and privately.

How To Influence People?
Pick an opinion leader (well respected and famous person) and associate him or her in your communication as this strategy is related to the "identification" factor. Mention how many people have contributed in a program in your communication so that other people will be influenced to fit in a society. Testimonials of past customers or people in similar situations sharing the benefits of using a particular product will add perceived value to the persuasion process. This will make the new buyers think "If others can solve their problems with this product, why can't I do the same?". The more testimonials you have, the greater will be the influence. Some people want real life social proof to believe facts or statements, and videos are the correct tool for persuading them. The higher the number of views for a relevant video, the more persuasive it will be at getting someone to view it.

Remove Recycler Virus - What it is and How to Conduct a Recycler Virus Removal

Recycler virus is a virus that exploits the autorun feature of Windows. It copies the autorun.inf files on each drive of the computer, be it permanent or a removable media such as DVDs, CD ROMs, USB Devices, or Memory Sticks. The recycler virus originated from the W32.Lecna.H worm that spreads itself by copying itself to all the active drives.

The virus creates a hidden folder in each active drive. Each time you insert a removable media, it will execute itself. It uses a batch file to modify the system registry and executes itself each time the system starts up. You cannot remove the virus even after formatting your removable media. The anti-virus software may detect it but cannot remove it.

The recycler virus is very destructive. Once it infects your computer, it will connect itself to malicious websites and download the malicious code to your computer. The malicious code will then steal your personal information such as credit card information, social security, account numbers, usernames, and passwords stored on your computer.

Remove Recycler Virus - What it is and How to Conduct a Recycler Virus Removal

Conduct a Recycler Virus Removal

You can remove the recycler virus both manually and by using any recycler virus removal tool. To remove the virus manually, you need to:

1. Search for the process called CTFMON.EXE and kill it through Task Manager.

2. Search CTFMON.EXE file in the Startup menu and delete it.

3. Boot the system in safe mode and open the command prompt.

4. Disable hidden, system, and read only attributes for autorun.inf and recycled folder delete them.

5. Clean the recycle bin.

6. Repeat these steps for all the drives on your computer.

7. Open registry editor and modify the NoDriveTypeAutoRun entry with 03ffffff value after searching it in following registry folders: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARE HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWARE

8. Reboot and scan your system with latest antivirus software.

The manual removal of the infection is not recommended because it requires an expertise to edit windows registry. In case you remove/modify a wrong registry entry, you may cause severe damage to your system. Therefore, it is always better to remove Recycler Virus with a specialized removal tool.

Do Mass Media Influence the Political Behavior of Citizens

Outside of the academic environment, a harsh and seemingly ever-growing debate has appeared, concerning how mass media distorts the political agenda. Few would argue with the notion that the institutions of the mass media are important to contemporary politics. In the transition to liberal democratic politics in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe the media was a key battleground. In the West, elections increasingly focus around television, with the emphasis on spin and marketing. Democratic politics places emphasis on the mass media as a site for democratic demand and the formation of "public opinion". The media are seen to empower citizens, and subject government to restraint and redress. Yet the media are not just neutral observers but are political actors themselves. The interaction of mass communication and political actors -- politicians, interest groups, strategists, and others who play important roles -- in the political process is apparent. Under this framework, the American political arena can be characterized as a dynamic environment in which communication, particularly journalism in all its forms, substantially influences and is influenced by it.

According to the theory of democracy, people rule. The pluralism of different political parties provides the people with "alternatives," and if and when one party loses their confidence, they can support another. The democratic principle of "government of the people, by the people, and for the people" would be nice if it were all so simple. But in a medium-to-large modern state things are not quite like that. Today, several elements contribute to the shaping of the public's political discourse, including the goals and success of public relations and advertising strategies used by politically engaged individuals and the rising influence of new media technologies such as the Internet.

A naive assumption of liberal democracy is that citizens have adequate knowledge of political events. But how do citizens acquire the information and knowledge necessary for them to use their votes other than by blind guesswork? They cannot possibly witness everything that is happening on the national scene, still less at the level of world events. The vast majority are not students of politics. They don't really know what is happening, and even if they did they would need guidance as to how to interpret what they knew. Since the early twentieth century this has been fulfilled through the mass media. Few today in United States can say that they do not have access to at least one form of the mass media, yet political knowledge is remarkably low. Although political information is available through the proliferation of mass media, different critics support that events are shaped and packaged, frames are constructed by politicians and news casters, and ownership influences between political actors and the media provide important short hand cues to how to interpret and understand the news.

Do Mass Media Influence the Political Behavior of Citizens

One must not forget another interesting fact about the media. Their political influence extends far beyond newspaper reports and articles of a direct political nature, or television programs connected with current affairs that bear upon politics. In a much more subtle way, they can influence people's thought patterns by other means, like "goodwill" stories, pages dealing with entertainment and popular culture, movies, TV "soaps", "educational" programs. All these types of information form human values, concepts of good and evil, right and wrong, sense and nonsense, what is "fashionable" and "unfashionable," and what is "acceptable" and "unacceptable". These human value systems, in turn, shape people's attitude to political issues, influence how they vote and therefore determine who holds political power.

Proven Ways to Increase Restaurant Sales

The continuous mission for every restaurant owner, even successful ones, is to increase restaurant sales. With so many dining establishments vying for a customers business, effective marketing measures are key ingredients for attracting customer attention, establishing your restaurants identity and enhancing customer loyalty.

Word of mouth is the most cost efficient way to increase restaurant sales. If you present a wonderful dining experience, patrons will naturally refer your restaurant to others. But word of mouth works both ways. Bad reviews often travel faster than positive ones. Thats why its essential to be consistent in providing excellent customer service, quality food and an inviting atmosphere.

While chain restaurants rely on a corporate formula to increase restaurant sales, independent restaurateurs can be more flexible, giving them a greater advantage. One important strategy is getting to know your customers. Theres a reason why clubs, theater groups, business people, or friends who get together weekly only dine at one particular restaurant. Its because the owner greeets them by name, knows their dining preferences and is aware of things going on in their lives. These restaurants have created a trusting, family environment that builds customer retention.

Proven Ways to Increase Restaurant Sales

Without a doubt, rewarding repeat customers can lead to increased profits. If you know a customer has referred others to your restaurant or consistently brings in a group of business associates, consider giving a gift certificate for a complimentary dinner or providing a free appetizer or bottle of wine for the table. This is a great sales tactic to motivate your good customers to bring in business to your restaurant.

Your staff is an integral part of building sales. Besides providing impeccable customer service, your staff can increase restaurant sales by up-selling to increase the table check. Rather than ask if anyone would like a drink, appetizer or dessert, they should note which ones are house specialties or offer their personal recommendations. They should also promote higher priced dishes with reasons showcasing their value.

A comprehensive advertising and marketing plan is essential in growing and maintaining a profitable restaurant business. Your advertising needs to set your restaurant apart from others and pique a persons interest to try it. Your marketing efforts should be both in-house with promotions and in the community. Have a presence at community events within your service area, network with business and trade groups, or get involved with a charity that is of interest to you. The more visibility you can give your restaurant, the greater your market reach.

Using the Internet to increase profitability is a must. Your restaurants website should be as interactive as possible, allowing people to make reservations, see current specials and easily get directions. Have a presence on social media sites, like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

Incentives take on many forms, but all have shown to increase restaurant sales. Some examples of common incentives are discounts, coupons, punch cards, customer loyalty programs, business card drawings, promotions and special events. You might want to try a combination of incentives to enhance business.

What Are the Effects of Social Networking Websites?

"Words can't describe me", is how Adnan Patrawala, 16 yr old teenager from Mumbai, India had described himself on his Orkut profile. However, his kidnappers and murderers got to know a little more of him and ensnared him into a trap which ultimately led to the death of the young boy. This is perhaps an extreme example of the social impact of these social networking sites such as Orkut, Facebook, MySpace and Friendster on today's youth. But there is no denying its presence or its effects in our lives and minds today.

Often these days when we make new friends we do not ask, "What's your number?" Or "What's your email id?" Instead we ask, "What's your MySpace"? or "Are you on Orkut?" Such is the impact of these sites on our lives .The way we speak, the way we interact and the way we think is changing. Words such as scrapping, blogging, teasers---which a few years back wouldn't have made any sense to anybody; but today it's being used with so much spontaneity.

As a matter of fact, Google even has links to sites, which gives the world's most popular acronyms. It is amusing but that is the way it is.

What Are the Effects of Social Networking Websites?

However, these sites fulfill a very basic criterion of humans. It is that of communication. People living in extreme corners of the world are seen to be getting married, friends from far-off places are able to keep in touch with each other and lovers from two parts of the world stay connected with each other's emotional needs. These help us make new friends, stay in touch with the old ones and let us know more about the persons we care... their likes, dislikes, interests and emotions.

There is an element of addictiveness in these sites and the youth are indeed getting endeared more and more into this addiction. The most appealing thing among these sites is that they provide a platform for the individuals to express their views, gives them the freedom of choice and expression... from anti-war campaigns to global warming issues, from Harry potter fan clubs to Osama bin Laden hate clubs... there is everything for everyone to share and speak about.

What else could be more appealing than the thought of being heard not just by your group of friends but to the whole wide world. And that is where I feel these sites are here to stay. It just emphasizes the fact that man is a social being and shall always remain so.

What is Social Media? Social Media and Networking Sites Explained

Social media is media that is based on social interaction. It involves being highly accessible and changes monologues into dialogues. This format is often referred to by business as User generated content or consumer generated media. Most consumers are aware of it only from the stand point of the networking sites. Of course if social media is new to you this paragraph probably sounds like crazy talk, but please read on.

What are networking sites?

These are very popular websites used for socializing, connecting and even meeting others. People build connections with those they know. This allows for an amount of privacy by allowing users to hide their information from everyone but those who are "friends." Some of the most popular sites are Facebook, Twitter, MySpace even YouTube. Networking sites allow friends, family, workers and others to meet online and share information, or social interaction.

What is Social Media? Social Media and Networking Sites Explained

Why is Social Interaction so important?

People are very social creatures. Our society has become increasingly mobile. People move far away from where they grew up yet want to stay connected. Also busy schedules keeps people on the move. However the internet and networking sites are always ready. So people are able to interact with people they care about any time of day. This has formed open dialogues in groups of friends and families.

What do you mean dialogues?

Years ago an open invite to the lake meant calling various people and asking them to call others. Now a person may put an open invitation on the wall of Facebook. Various people may respond with what they will bring or if they are coming or bringing someone. Some people use social media to ask about new restaurants or what restaurant to visit in another city.

How does this turn monologues into dialogues?

A simple statement such as "I read this book," on a social networking site might have another say, "I read that one, but this other book is better." A third person who did not care about the first book may read the comment about the second and agree. In another case, a person may share that they went to London for vacation. Various friends and family members will comment about when they went or how they wish they could go. People may ask about sites seen.

But how do businesses benefit?

Businesses have watched this from the sidelines and now realized they need to be involved. Companies create fan pages and fans interact with each other and the brand name on the pages. The fans discuss what they like, what they dislike, thus the User Generated Content or Consumer Generated Media. Any size of business is finding that having someone interact with the fans and create social media is a way to grow the business by networking. People like doing business with a friend, or a friendly business.

Do I need social media?

That is a personal decision. As an individual, networking sites allow you to interact with people both down the street and around the world. With privacy settings, you keep your privacy and are able to share with the people who matter.

For businesses, this is a way to find out what your consumer wants and needs directly from them. You are also able to establish a relationship with consumers which helps your business grow. Social media is only going to grow as people find more uses for it, because people are social and so is social media.
